In India, Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on 21 May to mark the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tiger of Tamil Elam (LTTE), Kalaivani Rajaratnam alias Dhanu on 21 May 1991.

The P.V. Narasimha Rao-led Congress government, which came to power after the 1991 election, declared 21 May as an anti-terrorism day to pay tribute to Rajiv Gandhi.

The first anti-terrorism day was observed on 21 May 1992.

Rajiv Gandhi was the 6th prime minister of India (31 October 1984-2 December 1989). He was the youngest person to become the prime minister of India at the age of 40 years.
