Mangroves have been recognised as salt-tolerant (halophytic) coastal forests that grow in intertidal zones, estuaries, deltas, and sheltered shorelines. The BIS has developed the draft standard under the BIS Act, 2016, through its technical committee EED 06: WG 02, constituted in 2023.
