A printer puts numbers on the pages of a book starting with 1. He uses 3189 digits in all. The number of pages in the book is

Number of one digit pages = 9

Number of two-digit pages = 90

Number of three digit pages = 900

Number of digits used upto 3-digit pages = 9 +

2 × 90 + 900 × 3

= 9 + 180 + 2700 = 2889

Number of remaining digits = 3189–2889 = 300

$\therefore$ Number of four digit pages $=\frac{300}{4}=75$

$\therefore$ Number of pages in the book $=9+90+900+75=1074$
