The ’Doctrine of Basic Structure’ was propounded by the Supreme Court in the Keshavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala case of 1973. Justice Hans Raj Khanna asserted through this doctrine that the constitution possesses a basic structure of constitutional principles and values. This doctrine was used to put a limitation on the amending powers of the Parliament so that the ’basic structure of the basic law of the land’ cannot be amended in exercise of the ’constituent power’ of parliament under the Constitution.
