Why Age Matters in Competitive Exams
For almost every government and entrance examination in India, age is calculated as on a fixed cut-off date mentioned in the official notification — not as on the day you fill the form. A difference of even one day can decide whether you are eligible. Knowing your precise age in years, months and days helps you confirm eligibility and plan how many attempts you have left.
Cut-off Dates for Major Exams
Each examining body fixes its own reference date. Below are the commonly used cut-off dates and age limits (always re-check the latest notification, as relaxations and dates can change each cycle).
| Exam | Typical Age Limit | Usual Cut-off Date |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | 18–32 years (post-wise) | 1 January of exam year |
| SSC CHSL / MTS | 18–27 years | 1 January of exam year |
| UPSC Civil Services | 21–32 years | 1 August of exam year |
| IBPS / SBI PO | 20–30 years | 1st of the notification month |
| IBPS / SBI Clerk | 20–28 years | 1st of the notification month |
| RRB NTPC | 18–33 years | 1 January of exam year |
| State PSC | 21–40 years (state-wise) | Varies by state |
Age Relaxation Rules
Upper age limits are relaxed for reserved categories. These are added on top of the general upper limit:
- OBC (non-creamy layer): +3 years
- SC / ST: +5 years
- PwD (Persons with Disability): +10 years (general), more for OBC/SC-ST
- Ex-servicemen & departmental candidates: as per specific rules
Worked Example
Suppose your date of birth is 15 March 2000 and you are applying for SSC CGL with a cut-off of 1 January 2026. Your age as on the cut-off is 25 years, 9 months, 17 days. Since the limit is 18–32, you are comfortably eligible. Enter these dates in the calculator above to verify.
