Selection Process for SBI Probationary Officer

The recruitment runs through three distinct phases. Each phase has its own role in shaping the final merit list.

Phase I: Preliminary Examination

This online objective test carries 100 marks and lasts one hour. It has three sections: English Language (40 questions), Quantitative Aptitude (30 questions), and Reasoning Ability (30 questions), each with separate timing. There is no sectional cut-off here, and roughly 10 times the number of vacancies per category move ahead.

Phase II: Main Examination

The Mains consists of an objective paper worth 200 marks (Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, and English Language) and a descriptive paper worth 30 marks covering communication skills like emails, situation analysis, and report or precis writing. Sectional cut-offs apply in this stage.

Phase III: Psychometric Test, Group Exercise & Interview

Shortlisted candidates face a psychometric test, a group exercise (20 marks), and a personal interview (30 marks). The final merit is built by normalizing Phase II and Phase III scores to 100 marks (75 for the written test and 25 for GE & Interview). Marks from the Preliminary Examination do not count toward the final list. Do note that wrong answers in objective tests attract a penalty of one-fourth of the allotted marks.

Salary and Pay Scale

The starting basic pay for an SBI PO is Rs. 48,480 (with 4 advance increments) on the scale of 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920 under Junior Management Grade Scale-I. Officers are also entitled to DA, HRA, CCA, Provident Fund, NPS, LFC, medical benefits, lease rental, and other allowances. The approximate cost-to-company at the initial stage for the Mumbai centre works out to around Rs. 21.97 lakh per year.
