If you're aiming for a Junior Research Fellowship, an Assistant Professor career, or a Ph.D. seat in an Indian university, your next big date is here. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the UGC-NET June 2026 notification, and the application window is now open.

Here's a complete breakdown of what the notification says, what's new this cycle, and what you need to do next.

What is UGC-NET?

The University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a national-level exam conducted by NTA on behalf of the UGC. It determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for three career tracks:

  1. Award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as Assistant Professor
  2. Appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.
  3. Admission to Ph.D. only

For Ph.D. admissions under categories 2 and 3, the NET score now carries 70% weightage, with the remaining 30% based on the university's interview or viva voce. NET marks for Ph.D. admission are valid for one year from the date of result declaration.

Examination Pattern: What to Expect on Test Day

UGC-NET June 2026 will be conducted entirely in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The paper has two parts, attempted back-to-back with no break in between.

Paper 1 (General Aptitude)

  • 50 questions, 100 marks
  • Tests teaching/research aptitude, reasoning, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness

Paper 2 (Subject Paper)

  • 100 questions, 200 marks
  • Tests domain knowledge in the subject you select while applying

Key details:

  • Total duration: 180 minutes (3 hours), no break between papers
  • All questions are objective-type MCQs and compulsory
  • Each correct answer: +2 marks
  • No negative marking for incorrect answers
  • Medium: English and Hindi (except language papers)

The medium of question paper, once selected Coal India Jobs during application, cannot be changed later, so think carefully before locking it in.

Eligibility Criteria

For General / Unreserved / EWS candidates: At least 55% marks in Master's degree or equivalent from a UGC-recognized institution.

For OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD / PwBD / Third Gender candidates: At least 50% marks in Master's degree or equivalent.

Final-year Master's students can also apply — they'll be admitted provisionally and must complete the qualifying degree with the required percentage within two years (for JRF/Assistant Professor) or one year (for Ph.D. admission only) from the NET result date.

What about 4-year UG students?

Candidates with a 4-year/8-semester bachelor's degree can apply if they have a minimum of 75% aggregate (with 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/EWS). Important caveat: these candidates are eligible for JRF and Ph.D. admission only — not for Assistant Professor appointment.

Even better, 4-year UG candidates can choose any subject for the NET regardless of their bachelor's discipline.

Age Limit

  • For JRF: Maximum 30 years as on 01 June 2026
    • Relaxation of up to 5 years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, PwBD, Third Gender, and women
    • Relaxation of up to 5 years for those with relevant research experience (with certificate)
    • 3 years' relaxation for LLM degree holders
    • Up to 5 years for ex-armed forces personnel
  • For Assistant Professor: No upper age limit
  • For Ph.D. admission: No LIC AAO Result upper age limit

Reservation Policy

The Government of India's reservation policy applies fully:

  • SC: 15%
  • ST: 7.5%
  • OBC-NCL (Central List): 27%
  • General-EWS: 10%
  • PwBD (40%+ disability): 5% horizontal reservation

Candidates from the Third Gender category get the same fee, age, and eligibility relaxations available to SC/ST/PwD/PwBD candidates.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

NTA has integrated the application process with MeriPehchaan, the Government of India's National Single Sign-On platform — which means you can log in using DigiLocker, JanParichay, or e-Pramaan credentials. Here's the flow:

  1. Register online at https://ugcnet.nta.nic.in/ using your own email ID and mobile number
  2. Fill the application form, upload a live photograph (captured via webcam), a recent scanned photo (10–200 KB, 80% face visible, no mask, white background), and your signature (4–30 KB)
  3. Pay the fee through SBI / Canara / ICICI / HDFC bank gateways via Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, or UPI
  4. Download the confirmation page — this only generates after successful payment

Things to be careful about

  • The email and mobile number must be your own — all communication goes there
  • Information cannot be edited after the correction window closes (24 May 2026)
  • NTA will not edit, alter, or modify any details once submitted, except during the correction window
  • No refund of fee will be entertained under any circumstances
  • Do not send any physical documents to NTA — the entire process is Eligibility online

Marking Edge Cases You Should Know

The bulletin clarifies what happens for ambiguous questions:

  • If multiple options are correct, candidates marking any correct option get +2
  • If all options are correct, every candidate who attempted gets +2
  • If a question is dropped or has no correct answer, only those who attempted it get +2

Since there's no negative marking, attempting every question is strategically sound — even guesses cost nothing.

What's New This Cycle

A few things worth noting in the June 2026 notification:

  • MeriPehchaan integration for single sign-on across government services
  • UMANG and DigiLocker integration planned for accessing exam-related documents like the score card (rollout in subsequent phases)
  • The 70/30 weightage rule (NET marks/interview) for Ph.D. admission under category 2 and 3 continues
  • 4-year UG candidates can appear in any NET subject regardless of their bachelor's discipline

Final Tips Before You Hit Submit

  1. Double-check your category, subject, and exam city choices — these cannot be changed after the correction window
  2. Read the official syllabus for your subject at https://www.ugcnetonline.in/syllabus-new.php (NTA does not provide it separately)
  3. Keep payment receipts and the confirmation page safely — you'll need them later
  4. Verify your eligibility yourself — NTA does not verify documents at the application stage, and ineligible candidatures can be cancelled at any point
  5. Don't wait until 20 May — server load on the last day is real, and so is the risk of payment failures

The exam is your gateway to academic and research careers across Indian universities, colleges, and even some PSU recruitments. With nine days of exam window (22–30 June) and lakhs of aspirants nationwide, planning your preparation timeline backward from your exam date is the smartest move you can make today.

Good luck — and apply early.
